Won’t You Get Down From There (2019)

Written, produced, and performed by Richard Steighner
(Pop, A Cappella)

Each week has brought a new lesson to this project. This week, I learned to seek help. The first 2 weeks (Miss Mae and I’m Just Tryna Feel Good) were done entirely on my own…soup to nuts. The production, the singing, the filming. But this one felt like it needed some help. So I reached out to a friend. Damien Giglietta is a film maker and runs a production company. They’re called 88 to 1 (no, this is not sponsored, just a thank you), and in a few hours, Damien had lit, shot, color-graded, and sent me the vid. I’m totally grateful, and the moral of the story is that if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.

This journey so far has been a balance therein. I have spent decades working with people and sometimes you go VERY far. Sometimes you go nowhere. That fear of nowhere is what’ll drive you to work on your own. And the first couple of milestones can come quickly, thereby encouraging you to keep working on your own. As I push onwards with this song-a-week project, I will look to do so with other people.

And I’ll be damned, this song has been nominated for a CARA award!  So, speaking of the song, it came from an odd set of circumstances. I live with my wife in Melbourne. We share a 1-bedroom apartment and it can get tough to work in the same space (especially when trying to make music, or, in her case, act). So I walk up to the library to work on headphones. Well this week, the library was damaged by water from a recent storm. So I found another spot about 45 minutes’ walk down the way. A new library, a new area. I started writing and experimenting with sounds on the headphones, looking out at the road. I started imagining our apartment from afar. And how when you’re mad or want to be alone, but you can’t, you have to make a choice. You have to talk yourself down. And find ways to make your space.

It can spiral out of control, the mind. We can find ourselves questioning so much but willing to do so little. Or maybe too much.

Wow, I am rambling! It’s all in the song…what am I trying to explain for? Just enjoy!

Presenting….Won’t You Get Down From There. The 3rd song in my song-a-week project.
