Week 2 has arrived already! That means a new song and a new video.

I’m Just Tryna Feel Good is all about getting rid of the negativity in your life.

Everything is recorded a cappella–in other words, I only use my voice, beatbox, and some body percussion (snaps, claps, stomps). This particular song went through a number of iterations. I had written a part that I really liked and wanted to incorporate. But I had to learn NOT to be precious. It meant letting go of that section and pushing forward with what worked. I’d struggled to get past that point for most of the week, but when I let go, it only took a day to finish the project.

That sort of change actually aligns well with the point of the song. While it’s about letting go of negativity, sometimes it can be about letting go, full stop. Some things that seem good to you may not be. When you realize that (and stop worrying about holding on), life can improve VERY quickly. On top of that, the part that I really liked doesn’t get squashed into a project where it may not belong. It’d be like trying to wear Tom Ford to the beach–it makes no real sense, despite the quality of the suit. In a sense, it devalues the suit. Save it for the right venue. Enjoy the beach. Feel good.

I shot the video in Melbourne, Australia on one of the hottest and windiest days in a while. It knocked over the tripod at one point and even the birds were struggling to hold on. There is a great spot in Kensington under a bridge where the lighting is beautiful and it’s shielded from wind. The music video was made with a stabilizer the follows your movements. It lets me film myself and still move around. This process has allowed me to make videos faster than having to rely on a film crew or recording studio. Nothing against working with other people, but when putting out a video every week (on a budget), it’s hard to manage a crew.
