Building on their tremendous debut success in Hong Kong, The Exchange returned to the vibrant city, attracting hoardes of young fans. Their concerts sold out, their performances were drowned out by adoring fans, and their uniquely high energy brand of all-vocal music took the city by storm.
But their purpose went beyond entertainment. The Exchange embarked on a month long music-education program spread across dozens of schools in Hong Kong. Each day, the band memebers would head off in different directions to work with school kids and teach vocals, arranging, performance, and harmony.
To bring the whole program together, The Exchange’s beatboxer Richard Steighner organized a massive #MusicWalk to bring together all the students they’d met. In May 2013, hundreds of Hong Kong youth joined the band as they walked across the city (and even boated across the harbor), singing as they went. The noise was deafening and the band would stop occasionally to perform with the crowd (and take a breather). Overall, it was a 4 hour even that spanned miles and ended in a final performance and interview near Central.
The turnout was near 400 students, many of whom made the entire journey.
